Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are competing to sign the 24-year-old Copa America sensation

The Barcelona sporting director has identified Toluca winger Maxi Araujo as a less expensive option to Nico Williams, the team's primary priority for the summer transfer window, according to reports that surfaced earlier this week. At the current Copa America competition in the United States, the 24-year-old for Uruguay has been in incredible form, and it turns out that the Catalans are not the only La Liga team that is monitoring Araujo.

Atletico Madrid is reportedly interested in acquiring Araujo, who may be able to play left wing-back in Diego Simeone's 5-3-2 formation, according to ESPN Mexico (via MD). The player's representatives have had preliminary talks, but they have not expressed any more interest at this time.

Araujo is also attracting interest from several Premier League teams, which might complicate a deal for Barcelona and Atletico Madrid. After Copa America, Toluca expects interest to go up, and they have made it clear that they will only sell him for his €20 million release clause.
